Earp, Savulescu, Schuklenk and Porsdam Mann, ‘AI Watermarks May Be Poor Evidence of Intellectual Contribution’

ABSTRACT
Text watermarking is the latest method being widely discussed to make AI-generated writing detectable. Like other methods, it has technical limitations. However, we examine what even perfect detection would establish in academic publishing, focusing on authorship, intellectual credit, originality, responsibility, and provenance. We argue that the presence of AI-influenced text may correlate poorly with the degree and substance of human intellectual contribution.
