ABSTRACT
This study reviews and compares different sources of uniform substantive law on international sales and contracts, providing an overview of the methods developed to interpret them over the past nine decades. This historical approach helps us to understand the challenges of interpretation. Have uniform law instruments established a common solution for interpreting them? Have they learned from each other? They have gradually addressed the issue of interpretation by developing governing rules and shifting the focus away from the definition of specific legal concepts towards more abstract principles, such as the international character of the instrument. The regulatory approach of the Vienna Sales Convention has been the most influential in this area. However, these methods of interpretation were further refined in the UNIDROIT Principles and the Draft Common European Sales Law. Finally, the new perspectives offered by artificial intelligence-supported interpretation are briefly mentioned. The author would like to pay tribute to UNIDROIT on its 100th anniversary with this overview of legal development.
