ABSTRACT
The European Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ) is the key factor for the smooth operation of the Internal Market, aimed at ensuring the free movement of people, goods, and services within the EU while maintaining security and justice for more than 450m market participants. Private International Law (PIL) plays a significant role in the AFSJ, as it governs cross-border legal disputes and helps ensure legal certainty and predictability. The paper focuses on the role and effects of PIL – and in particular its jurisdictional components – in the AFSJ by exploring how it affects the content and policy objectives of national legal orders. By analyzing the impact of PIL on the AFSJ and economic convergence, this paper aims to provide insights to better understand how PIL in Europe transforms national justice systems.
