ABSTRACT
In this report, prepared on behalf of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, I present information about a number of aspects of the Georgia medical malpractice (‘med mal’) environment, including time trends in the number of large paid claims; total payouts and payout per physician on these claims; med mal premia charged to physicians by insurers; the ratio of premiums to payouts; and the number of practicing physicians (overall and in rural areas). I also compare Georgia’s performance on these dimensions to six other states (AL, FL, NC, SC, TN, TX). I then put the results from this empirical assessment of the Georgia med mal environment in broader context, drawing on my own med mal research.
