Call for Papers: ‘Protecting Business and Economic Interests: Contemporary Issues in Tort Law’, Singapore, 18-19 August 2016

This major international conference is jointly organised by Singapore Management University (School of Law), Bond University (Faculty of Law) and the Singapore Academy of Law. The purpose of the conference is to examine the role of tort law in protecting business and economic interests, with particular focus on nominate torts (such as the ‘economic torts’, defamation, breach of confidence, and statutory torts), including how these may intersect with claims in negligence. Contributions that consider more generally applicable concepts such as agency, accessory and vicarious liability, defences and remedies, and issues arising from the intersection of tort law with other subject areas (such as equity, intellectual property and public law) are also welcome so long as they are demonstrably relevant to the conference theme.

The keynote speaker of the conference is the Right Honourable the Lord Hoffmann, formerly Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, United Kingdom, now Honorary Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Queen Mary, University of London.

The Right Honourable the Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, will deliver the Distinguished Guest Speaker Lecture at the conference.

Other featured speakers include:
• Mayo Moran (University of Toronto)
• Jason Neyers (University of Western Ontario)
• Jeannie Paterson (Melbourne University)
• Robert Stevens (Oxford University)
• Stephen Todd (University of Canterbury)
• Christian Witting (Queen Mary, University of London)

Presenters are expected to meet their own travel costs and pay the registration fee. If you would like to offer a paper, please submit a working title and an abstract (of no more than 1500 words) by 31 January 2016 by email to Joachim Dietrich and Lee Pey Woan. Papers will be selected on the basis of quality, extent of engagement with the conference theme and fit with other papers being presented at the conference. Authors are welcome to offer more than one paper (although only one paper per author will be accepted).
