ABSTRACT
The relationship between technology and privacy is a complex one, and questions about why and how the law should protect information privacy are not unique to the internet context. The foregoing is true, and the same applies in the context of privacy on blockchain, the advent of blockchain has led to a furore with regards to its incongruity with the underlying principles of data protection laws in the EU and the UK, especially the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK Data Protection Act 2018 (‘UK-GDPR’) as amended by the DPPEC Regulation. The question that keeps arising is whether data protection laws can actually achieve privacy ends on blockchain and other emerging ends, and this remains to be seen.
