ABSTRACT
This paper investigates consumer protection against AI-enabled manipulation in the EU, focusing on the limitations of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD). It highlights the need for transparency and accountability in AI technologies, suggesting Explainable AI (XAI) as a solution to enhance consumer protection. The paper argues for the critical role of XAI in promoting accountability and transparency, potentially leading to greater consumer trust and a more ethical approach to online consumer targeting.
